Split Itinerary: 1, 2 or 3 Days
The best Split itinerary depends less on how many attractions exist and more on how much of the trip you want to spend inside the city. The historic centre is compact enough to understand in a day, but Split becomes a stronger base when you have time for Marjan, food, the islands or a historical excursion inland.
If you have one day in Split
- Morning: Diocletian’s Palace and the Old Town.
- Midday: market, lunch and the Riva.
- Afternoon: Marjan, a food experience or more time inside the historic centre.
- Evening: return to the waterfront and central lanes.
See the full one day in Split itinerary for the detailed route.
If you have two days in Split
Use the first day for Split itself. On the second, choose one clear direction rather than mixing several distant attractions:
- History: Klis + Salona.
- Easy historic trip: Trogir.
- Nature: Krka or Omiš/Cetina.
- Sea: Hvar or another island route.

If you have three days in Split
Three days lets you keep one full day for the city, one day for an excursion and one day for whichever side of Split interests you most: food, Marjan, beaches, another historic town or an island.
Day 1: understand Split
Begin with Diocletian’s Palace, continue through the Old Town, and walk the Riva. A guided walk early in the trip can make the rest of your stay easier because you learn how the city fits together. Compare Split walking tours or use our self-guided route.
Day 2: choose one excursion
Do not choose purely by distance. Pick the experience that adds something the city itself cannot: Klis for fortress history and views, Trogir for another historic urban centre, Krka for nature, or a boat trip for islands and swimming.
Day 3: slow down
Use the last day for the part of Split most rushed visitors skip. Walk Marjan, join a food tour, revisit the Palace interiors, or spend more time at the markets and waterfront.
What if you arrive by cruise ship?
Ignore multi-day itineraries and use a hard time-boxed plan instead. Our Split cruise port guide is designed around short calls and return-to-ship risk.
What if you visit in summer?
Avoid designing the whole day around exposed sightseeing in the hottest hours. Start earlier, use indoor/ticketed stops or long lunches around midday, and return to walking later. Marjan and boat trips also need realistic heat and sun planning.
Official planning inspiration
Visit Split publishes its own one-day and three-day suggestions. We use the same basic principle: start with the Palace and historic core, then expand outward only when your available time supports it.
